Boys Varsity Basketball · Boys Basketball Weekly Update Jan 5-11

Thanks for taking some time to read these updates. Our team is sitting at 3-7, but for the most part I have liked the way that we are playing. Our biggest problem right now is putting together a full 36 minutes of consistent, well played basketball. With our lack of size, we are very reliant on the 3 point shot and we just haven’t shot it very well to start the season. That being said, we have led in the second half of 5 of the 7 losses on the year so we need to learn how to finish…for a young team this is to be expected. We will get better at closing out games and I expect us to have a much better middle 1/3 of the season.

This week we had two conference games and the recaps are below:

Tuesday vs Princeton 70-77 Loss

Without question, the game that we played our best 36 minutes of the year. Princeton is one of the top teams in our conference and section and we were able to stick with them throughout the entire game, having it 63-67 late in the second half. We weren’t able to finish the game with a win, but I loved how hard we played and the confidence that we played with. Looking back at the game, we had a number of careless turnovers that we weren’t able to overcome.

Logan Murphy had the best game of his young career with 22 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and he took 8 CHARGES!!! If he continues to improve at the rate that he has he is in for a great season and career. Carter Whitman also had one of the best games of the season with 20 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists. Trevor Johnson added 13 points and Anthony Riley had 9 off of the bench.

Friday vs St Francis 47-63 Loss

If any game shows the reliance that we have on the 3, our St Francis game is that one. We were able to jump out to an early 20-10 lead and held a 31-20 lead early in the second half but then we went ice cold from the field and they heated up. I was really impressed with our guys defensively in the first half, holding St Francis to 18 points at halftime. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to take advantage of that as much as we would have liked…only having an 8 point lead going into the locker rooms.

Partway through the second half we led 37-31 and then St. Francis closed the game on a 32-10 run. Our shots weren’t falling, we weren’t able to get to the basket or free throw line, and I think our lack of scoring affected our defense (and St. Francis just played really well offensively down the stretch).

We were able to force 22 turnovers and attempted 15 more field goals than the Saints…but we shot 8/37 from beyond the arc. Just have to shoot better.

Carson Klein led the way with 11 points (all in the 1st half) and 3 rebounds. Trevor also had 11 points, Drew had 7 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals, and Carter Whitman had 6 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists. For us to win, we definitely need more than 2 people with more than 7 points.

We are looking forward to a big week with Rocori on Monday, Becker on Thursday, and Hermantown on Saturday.
