The boys basketball team went up to Hermantown for an afternoon game against the Hawks on Saturday and lost 72-87. Hermantown, the current 2 seed in the section and last years state representatives pose a difficult matchup with shooters all over the court. I thought we played one of the better games of the year but made a few mental mistakes down the stretch and weren’t able to put together a run in the second half to take the lead.
After getting down 37-53 early in the second half we fought our way back to 60-65 and despite getting a few stops and opportunities to close the gap even more, we weren’t able to take advantage on the offensive end.
Hermantown made 16 3’s for the game (10 in the first half) which were the main difference in the game.
Drew VanEerden led the way with a 31 point, 6 rebound, 5 assist, and 5 steal game! Zach Gazda, in his third game back, put up 17 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Carter and Conner each added 8 points and Conner led the team with 8 rebounds.
I feel like we are finally starting to play the way that we thought we would all year, but the schedule doesn’t get any easier down the stretch.
We travel to St. Michael on Thursday for our only game of the week.
