The Vikings basketball team fell to St. Michael-Albertville 67-87 on Thursday afternoon. We fell behind 31-53 late in the first half before playing them even (36-33) the rest of the way. We have to do a better job to end runs earlier so we don’t get ourselves so far behind the eight ball.
STMA had two very strong and skilled bigs that gave us issues throughout the game. We struggled in the paint, getting outscored 46-24 in the paint, 18-6 on second chance points, and getting outrebounded 44-22. Also, for the second game in a row, we were stung by outside shooting with STMA going 9-16 from beyond the arc.
On the bright side, we did a very good job taking care of the ball against their man-to-man defense, only committing 12 turnovers for the game. We also shot 10-23 on 3’s and were 11-14 on FTs.
It’s been great having Zach Gazda back from injury…he ended up going for 26 points (5-8 on 3’s), 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 blocks. Colby Knutson had his best game for a while ending up with 16 points and 2 assists. Conner Hartmann contributed 12 points and 6 rebounds.
Despite going 1-2 over the last three games, I think this is the best we have played all year. We are healthy (though Rylen Nelson was sick for the STMA game) and our chemistry is improving.
Next week is a critical week for us with games against Rogers and Monticello. Both lost a number of players off of last years teams (including perennial all conference players Jordan Belka from Rogers and Matt Todd from Monticello) but are both playing extremely well of late.
